Reconciliation
As a kid, unicorns were one of my obsessions. A beautiful horse with magic and stabby potential? Yes please. So why is he undead? Because trauma does a number on childhood wonder, and my inner kid took a hit throughout the years. (Adulthood is lame sometimes). As an artist and a mother, I’ve done a lot to rekindle and embrace the wonder and imagination I’ve lost. My inner unicorn is very much alive, although not completely whole. It isn’t easy coming back from death, but imagine the power in something that does. (And don’t worry, it won’t eat your brains….probably).
The corvid represents a lot of who I am now. They never forget who has done them kindness, and certainly remember who has done them wrong. They are clever problem solvers, and warn of impending danger. Very misunderstood, and a bit of an outcast in the bird world, they click with my experience as a person with autism. Best of all, they’ve got the freedom of flight.
Reconciliation is about the merging of these two selves into the person I am today. Trauma is painful, as is life, and it changes you. But different you is certainly not less.
